Q: What is axe throwing?
A: Axe throwing is a fun and exciting game of throwing hatchets at a wood target. Where the goal is to get the axe blade to stick into the wood within the target. Historically people threw axes possibly for hunting or protection. In more recent history lumberjack games included axe throwing. Now it is a popular sport and something everyone should try sometime. Q: Is axe throwing dangerous?
A: You are throwing real axes, and it is super important to follow all axe throwing rules. Our facility, is set up to decrease risk as much as possible. We have a fence between each lane, all throwers must watch a safetly and training video before throwing and our axe coaches will watch throwers to make sure they know how to throw safely. One safety rule is wearing closed toe shoes, we do have crocs you can borrow if needed. Another rule is to not stand right behind someone that is throwing. Also, do not touch the blade, it may be sharp, just leave it alone. Axe throwing is usually a safe and fun activity.
Q: Do you use real axes?
A: Technically our house axes are hatchets designed for throwing, but axe throwing can be done with a hatchet from a hardware store too.
Q: What are the targets made of?
A: We use Cottonwood targets, these wood targets are wonderful for sticking the axe. Our Cottonwood targets are shipped from the East Coast to give our guests the best axe throwing experience possible. We have digital games projected onto the wood targets, so you can change up the games you play while throwing axes, knives or stars. We use the Hyper Axe progected target game system.
Q: Can I only throw axes?
A: Here at FlagTagAZ, you can throw axes, knives or stars. Most people find the knives the hardest to throw and the stars the easiest. We have specific knives here approved by our insurance to throw, you can not bring your own unapproved knives.
Q: I’m having a hard time getting the axe to stick, what are some things I can try.
A: Try changing your hand position. Sometimes if you are throwing from the wrist, holding the axe a little closer to the head will help stop that tendency. If you are throwing one handed, try two handed and via versa. Some people tend to naturally gravitate towards one way of throwing over the other. Another thing to try changing is the distance of where you are throwing as long as you are throwing from behind the red line.
Q: Is technique or power more important?
A: It is all about technique. With the right technique almost anyone can throw and stick the axe. Using too much power can be dangerous and mess us the technique that is needed.
Q: Can beginners pick up axe throwing the first time?
A: Yes, usually beginners can throw successfully their first time with a just little training. If someone is really struggling we recommend trying the throwing star for a few minutes as sometimes that will take the pressure off and you can relax enough to throw the axe successfully.
Q: Is there an age requirement for axe throwing?
A: At FlagTagAZ, you can throw axes at 10 years of age, anyoneage 10 to 16 must have a parent with them at all times from watching the safelty video and throughout their throwing time.
Q: Can spectators come and watch?
A: Axe throwing can be very entertaining to watch. People especailly seem to enjoy watching beginners try it for the first time. At FlagTagAZ we do not charge for people who are not going to throw, but are only watching thier friends, family or coworkers.
Q: Do I have to make a reservation for axe throwing at FlagTagAZ?
A: We would love for you to make a reservation, this allows us to have the boards ready, and prepares our staff for your visit. We do take walk-ins too. Large groups please book ahead of time to insure space and time for your group.
Q: What should I wear to axe throw?
A: For axe throwing you must have closed toe shoes on. We do have crocs you can borrow if needed. You may need to remove a large jacket or hat so that you can move your arms freely for an overhead throw.
Q: Is there an axe throwing leagues?
A: FlagTagAZ has a throwing league that meets every Tuesday night. You don’t have to good to come throw. No matter your skill level you can improve your own personal throwing skills by joining league. For more info check out our league page.
